My undergraduate experience, in the College of Engineering at San Diego State University (SDSU), was greatly inspiring and productive. I worked hard to establish myself as a serious student to the engineering faculty by tutoring, mentoring, and seeking to assist with research projects. I also worked to develop and maintain a good engineering GPA. I was soon introduced to Dr. Satchi Venkataraman, a faculty member in the Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics Department. Dr. Venkataraman became my advisor, and I found him to be dedicated to the academic and professional development of his students. After a year's time of discussing and expanding on small course-level projects, he recommended me to a NASA summer research program, which I was admitted to two consecutive years. This, in turn, led to a Graduate Research Assistanship offer under a joint NASA-Virginia Tech (VT) program, administered by the National Institute of Aerospace, in Virginia. Dr. Venkataraman helped to identify my future graduate committee chair at VT, as well. Prior, to entering graduate school, I accepted a design engineering position with a small aerospace outfit in California's Mojave Desert to gain practical experience, and develop my perspective on what I would expect to gain through graduate study. I then entered graduate school, completed my research and coursework, and defended my thesis successfully. SDSU provided stimulating coursework and projects, engaging and motivating faculty members engaged in real research, together with a modern and beautiful campus in Southern California. Students are encouraged to participate in research, leading to participation in conferences, and publication in professional journals. Motivated prospective students should strongly consider SDSU for their undergraduate education. While I was a student in SDSU's undergraduate school of engineering, I interacted with then-current graduate students, and took two graduate-level engineering courses. Through this exposure, and the knowledge that graduate students have access to the same excellent faculty, I recommend prospective students consider SDSU for their graduate studies, as well.
