In those fast fact guidebooks, Saint Joseph's University looks like a great place.

Half the campus is in Philadelphia, which means one 10 minutes train ride/ 20 minute bus ride will take you right into the heart of the city. The academics are decent, the business school is highly ranked, and there are many extra-curricular. SJU is quick to brag about "cura personalis": you will not be a number at this school.

But that is the least of your worries. Classes are small, but majors are extremely limited. Want to major in Applied Math? Statistics? Engineering? Linguistics? Etc, etc, etc? Too bad. SJU doesn't have it. Don't come here if you're not 100% sure of your major. If you come in undecided, you will probably end up deciding on a major that does not exist at SJU. The business school is the exception to this: they have probably every major you can think of, including a new one called "Leadership, Ethics, and Organizational Sustainability." They should probably rename just this major "Complete BS."

SJU stresses community service, which is nice, but you'll soon find that the "faith-justice" institute, also known as Wolfington, is comprised essentially of a large group of students and staff who are extremely pretentious, and think that they are a higher class of being because they do community service once in a while. They want you to join their cult, but only so they have another throat to shove their ideas down. A forget being accepted at SJU if you're not Catholic. Students everywhere talk about their obsessions with various priests. I wish I was kidding.

There are also only two kinds of students here: smart kids here on huge merit scholarships (which SJU hands out like water at the Boston Marathon) and rich kids who are dumb as hell. One girl in my History class actually asked what World War the Holocaust was a part of. There is also almost no diversity, despite what they try to tell you at accepted students day. This school has tons of money, but they spend it carelessly. The cafeteria food sucks- but once in a while they have ice sculptures on display. The wireless is terrifyingly bad, depending on where you live- but if you go to the tech center to complain, or to get help resolving computer issues, they will bribe you with a free fancy Ethernet cable to you'll pretend the problem went away.

One bright spot at SJU is the professors. Almost every professor I have had has been helpful, and two or three have even been exceptional.

Even so, I can't wait to be leaving this school forever in a few weeks. If you want a business degree (the food-marketing program is top-notch), if you went to private catholic school all of your life, if you don't mind LIVING ALONGSIDE COACKROACHES in your dorm, come to SJU. If you want to avoid a swarming crowd of hypocritical idiots and girls who aren't wearing underwear- but they're wearing their northfaces!!!- then please for the love of Jesus go anywhere, ANYWHERE else.

questionI had the same experience, unfortunately I just dealt with it for four years…Where are you transferring to?
commentI think they are adding quite a few majors these years, including linguistics as you mentioned as non-existing above.
commentHow about a school like Tulsa state or university of central arkansas, nobody fights and gets all the same things!
