Major: Engineering Department (This Major's Salary over time)
Depending on your major, the Colorado School of Mines can be a great place to earn a good education in engineering. For its touted majors—those related to the earth sciences, such as petroleum engineering—you will likely be profoundly disappointed. My experience in the PE curriculum has been frankly awful, whereas my education in the core engineering disciplines has been exceptional. The latter requires understanding; the former asks for regurgitation. If you are unwilling to schmooze TA's and professors for homework answers and test questions, then the PE program at Mines is not right for you. If you value creative thinking in an industry with rich, dynamic, and difficult problems—then the PE program at Mines will torture you. If you are willing to put up with this crap and fork out the cash, while learning on your own outside of classes, then you will have great job opportunities. But Mines will not prepare you for a career in the petroleum industry.
