Major: Biology (This Major's Salary over time)
I am not entirely sure how this is still an accredited university. At least in the biology department, if you have any other options (or even if you don't), don't come to UNLV - regardless of if you're a prospective graduate or undergraduate student.I have been at UNLV for several years, and the department as well as university are incredibly unhelpful and destructive. The undergraduate requirements are basically nonsense and some of the actual courses are taught by people with only a bachelor's degree who don't entirely comprehend the material that they are "teaching" when much more qualified people with MS and PhDs are available and willing to teach the courses. This is because the department administration plays favorites and likes to show that they have power and can do what they want. This is UNACCEPTABLE for undergraduate student education and most students would be better off teaching themselves the material instead of paying the tuition dollars (and honestly, from talking to them it sounds like many of them have to do that anyway). The faculty overall are great and conduct excellent research, but the university provides absolutely NO help in trying to defray the cost of research or living. There is some research funding available from the graduate student society on campus, but that's about it. Teaching assistanceships are deplorable and in no way cover the cost of living. You would make far more money being a janitor or working at McDonalds. I especially do not recommend coming to UNLV if you have any kind of emotional or mental issues - you are restricted to a maximum of 10 counseling session throughout your entire UNLV career and are not allowed back regardless of severity of your condition.Take my advise and don't make the same mistakes I did.
