On the outside the u of m is great. The main campus is located right on the Mississippi river. There are buildings on both the east and west bank of the river. There is a large walking bridge that connects the two banks. The buildings on the mall, the older part of campus, are beautiful and very academic looking. If you can survive the deep freeze and snow covered landscape in the winter the campus is beautiful and looks like a great place to go to school. If you plan on being there in the summer bring your bike, the campus is very bike friendly.

On the inside the u of m isn't as nice.

The school has a pretty good reputation, but as far as I can see its completely undeserved.

If you plan on taking any math classes be prepared for your TA to not be able to speak much English.

If you want to ask your professor a quick question after class be prepared to wait in line for 15 minutes and be late for your next class.

The u of m is just one big bureaucracy.

The advisers are completely useless. If you need help with figuring out what classes to take or what major to choose you would be better off asking the guy sleeping in a cardboard box in the alley.

The professors are pretty hard to talk to. Most of them have limited office hours and making an appointment is extremely difficult because they are a lot more concerned with doing research and writing grants.

The students at the u of m aren't worth getting excited about either. Most of the them are very close-minded and think they are gods gift to earth. They are also mostly hard core democrats. If you didn't vote for Obama in the last election they will probably think its because you're a racist and if you aren't in favor of national health care you will be accused of hating poor people.

If you want to go to a school where the professors care about your success, where you are asked for your name not your id number, or where you might be able to meet some interesting people, you need to pick a different school.

To be happy and successful at the u of m you need to know exactly what you plan on majoring in before you even apply, you need to be completely self motivated and be able to learn without asking many questions. You will also need a big winter coat if you don't want to freeze to death.
