Date: Jun 13 2011 Major: Other (This Major's Salary over time) So, to clarify, I went to the Texas Maritime Academy for 3 1/2 years. I'll be dead honest, I'm in a great career and truly love my current job…but I hate how my co-workers cringe when they hear what school I went to. Texas A&M has been rolling out some cruddy officers recently, from what I've gathered. But, more to the point…they lie, constantly. When I started school a lot of promises were made regarding housing, various costs and the state of the school's training ship. They were all proved to be wrong. I was told that the Sirius would be a functioning training ship in a year or two. It wasn't, it was replaced by another rust bucket that is equally unusable by the students at A&M. I was told that I'd be able to move off campus after two years of school. I wasn't, despite having commendable grades and such. Instead, I was shoehorned into a room built as a single with another cadet for a year and a half, as was the majority of the TMA students at the school. The A/C was purposely being set to 80 degrees by the management (in April), the cable rarely worked, the WiFi was non-existent, the roof leaked, the sewer kept backing up and there was a constant odor of something rotting in the laundry room. When complaints were filed about the living conditions…they were simply ignored. I was constantly getting sick from the mold in the rooms as were several of my classmates, yet nothing was ever changed.Oh, and don't believe their sales pitch about the summer cruises. We've been sailing with Cal for several years now and probably will continue to do so. And it's not $4K for a summer cruise, as advertised. It's closer to $6K.
