Major: Communications (This Major's Salary over time)
Elon really is what you make of it. I know that can be said about a lot of colleges, but it's definitely true here.I am in a Fellows program at Elon (a type of honors program), but I'm also in a sorority and lived in a rowdy dorm freshman year, so I know people on both ends of the spectrum: people who work constantly and people who party constantly. Like other reviews have said, there are rich white preps who drink 4-7 nights a week and don't really care that much about schoolwork because they already have a job lined up for them right out of college. But then there are other extremely hardworking students who maintain high GPAs in hard classes, are actively involved in extracurriculars, and land great jobs and internships. If you want to be challenged at Elon, you can be - if you want to take an easy course load and spend most of your time lying outside drinking, you can get away with that too.Honestly, if I wasn't a communications major, I don't know if I'd go here. Most of the liberal arts classes I've taken are less intellectually stimulating than my high school classes, but I went to a very competitive high school and, from what I've heard, 100-level classes typically aren't very inspiring anyway. But the communications department is EXCELLENT. I took three communications classes my freshman year, and all my teachers absolutely exceeded my expectations. I have friends who are communications majors at other schools and many of them have only taken speech classes. If you're a comm major at Elon, you'll be WAY ahead of the game very early. I just ended my freshman year and I already know media history/theory and I can shoot and edit photos and videos and write articles and press releases. Since the comm program pushes you to get internships and get involved with student media, my resume is already loaded. You'll be challenged, too - a video that would get me an A in high school wouldn't get me a C here.As for the social life… I really hadn't heard anything bad about Elon before coming here, and everyone seems to love the parties, but I think they're only okay. Going Greek helps a LOT because you get to know so many more people. But most parties revolve heavily around getting blackout drunk and hooking up with whoever you can (from what I've heard, this is the same as most other colleges). If you want to do something fun other than get completely belligerent on a Saturday night, it can be hard to find something else to do, or someone to do it with.
