Major: Athletics/Training (This Major's Salary over time)
Similar to the majority of the students who have reviewed thus far, I agree that HPU is one huge marketing campaign. Everything is portrayed as "free" on tours, while it is paid for in your high tuition price. It is, as many other college students perceive us, a "country club" type of university.I graduated from a high school in a rural part of Maryland that was significantly more diverse than HPU. In this sense, it was disappointing to find close to zero diversity at HPU. The typical student is a financially well-off female. Greek life dominates the social scene. Even the other clubs on campus (for example- I joined the club soccer team) are dominated by Greeks. The social life consists mainly of parties, from Wednesday night through Saturday night. Granted, I did find my niche and there are students that stray from the stereotypical HPU student although they are difficult to find. With that being said, the distribution of funds within the school is very misconstrued. Everything is a tad misleading when it comes to a majority of university endorsed events. I, personally, have been told to "sell" the university while I was conducting an interview during Presidental Scholars weekend. It is disturbing to me that the University woulld take an event that is meant to learn about the applicants (as it should be) and be twisting into simplying another marketing platform. The Sciences, as a whole, are financially negleted. As an Exercise Science student, which represents the 6th largest major at High Point, we still have sub-par technology. The resources for our department are disappointing at best. For this reason, I consider transferring to a more developed and funded program. I fear going into graduate school unprepared due to lack of resources. With that being said, in four or five years HPU will be a great place to be once the School of Health Sciences is established. Until then, progress is questionable. Despite this, the faculty in this department are fabulous. The teachers are very accessible and are willing to help you succeed. Take advantage of the small class sizes and get to know your professors. My academic advisor is fantastic, she is incredibly helpful and willing to go the extra mile to help me fit in two minors. This is one reservation I have regarding transferring- I thrive in this kind of academic enviroment, and I am apprehensive to go to a university where I will be one of 300 students in a class.
