Major: Nursing (This Major's Salary over time)
I didn't know what exactly what I wanted to do when I graduated from high school in 2005. I went to Owens and got some classes done but did not take it as seriously as I should, don't get me wrong I went to class everyday but that's honestly about all. I worked a full time job for three years then went back to get my degree in Nursing. In my first semester it came out that the program lost one accredidation of many it had. The news medias blew it out of proportion and every single day for the two years I was in the nursing program asking me if the school was still accredited and if I would be able to get a job once I graduated. I have thick skin but it gets to you. Aside from that the faculty was about 50% good, 50% bad. You had your share of lazy teachers who clearly didn't want to be there, clinical instructors who cause you to loose opportunities because they wanted to take an extra long lunch or leave early, those who couldn't answer the questions that were on the tests THEY made, the ones who flip out on you at clinicals because they are fighting with their husband, the sexest one, and ones that were just plain rude ().The clinical experiences were seriously lacking, it seemed like every week I got a patient with a hip replacement or we didn't have enough patients for everyone. I was once chewed out by a clinical instructor who told me my patient was looking for me while I was on another floor she assigned me to. Now after I have passed every class they will not allow me to graduate until the end of summer because they changed this end of program exam so you have to get a 97% on it to pass. If you don't pass you have to go through this online program called VATI and at the end of VATI you take an exam just like the first one…but you only have to get a 90% on it to pass. What sense does that make?Community colleges have there place (take some classes, save some money) but if you are young, looking at the nursing department and have the opportunity go somewhere else…I would! Take some gen ed classes there, save money, move on! I truly truly regret entering this program, if I could do it over again I would go to a real college!
