Major: Psychology (This Major's Salary over time)
While academic success is important, students here tend to care way too much and fail to see "the big picture" in life. Most students are upper-middle class, in a pre-professional track and while seemingly friendly on the outset, are actually pretty soulless and predictable.

questionHow do you feel about the psychology education you got here?
responseThe psychology education I received at Northwestern was terrific, and for my experience, the most valuable part of going to Northwestern. Almost every psych course that I took left me elated, feeling as though I had become not only a better thinker, but a better person. Most of the professors in the psychology department are a pleasure to listen to during lecture and they receive very good instructor ratings (know as "CTECs" at Northwestern), with a few exceptions, of course. I was geared more towards a social psychology focus, rather than cognitive, but I found the couple courses I took in the latter area to be equally as enlightening.

If I did college over again, I think I would have been more efficient with courses that I had taken and gotten a double major with psychology and something "more practical" such as biology, a language, etc. in addition, as it has been tough to find a job as a recent grad and that may have helped (though I know it's been tough for pretty much all recent grads, save for maybe engineers). Bottom line, I would highly recommend taking psychology at NU in some capacity though!

If you have any other/more specific questions about Northwestern, the psych dept. there, etc. - please feel free to ask. I'm happy to help.

questionWell, actually, I have trouble understanding exactly what you can do with a psychology degree other than just psychologist or counselor, not that they're bad careers. I was just wondering what other options there are. Thanks in advance for any more help.
responseYes, a bachelor's degree in psychology is thought of as a pretty general degree, which can be good or bad - good in that you aren't locked into a specific career path yet, but at the same time "bad" because you don't yet have a specialized enough set of skills to pursue a lot of jobs within the field.

However, you'd be surprised at the things you can do with just a bachelor's in psych: it's good entry into the general business/administrative world, consulting, human resources, social work, and even teaching. If you place importance on achieving a high salary, those first three fields would be best, or continuing to graduate school for psychology.

I was actually a pharmacy technician for a short while after finishing school, then a sales rep (which was decent money, but I HATED it), and now in human resources, with plans to go back to graduate school soon for a degree in counseling psychology.

In college, I majored in psych (and legal studies) simply because I loved the subject material (psych). I'm a bit of an odd case because I have been indecisive/noncommittal when it comes to a career path, but I would highly recommend taking psych courses in college (it is a relatively easy major to complete and a very easy minor to pick up) but also along with another major/minor, so that you can be a little more well-rounded than I am :)

Best of luck to you! Hopefully I've been of some help. Let me know if you have any other questions.

commentThanks for all the help.: )

questionHello. I'm thinking of applying to NU for a major in psychology. I was very happy when I read your views on the degree in specific. However, I was a bit surprised by your evaluations on social life and individual life. Could you talk about that aspect of the college, too, please? Thank you.
