It is hard to adjust if you are an "outsider." If you did not graduate from high school in Louisville Metro / Jefferson or surrounding counties, it is difficult to find a "click" unless you join a sorority or frat. Many students form clicks based on their high school clicks so the adjustment for "outsiders" like me takes a lot to get use to. I had a different idea of what college would be like and expected more to do on campus. It is a sort of commuter school as campus is dead after 4:00 PM and on the weekends outside of a football game or during the Derby events. Have run into many Tea-Party like closeminded students though Louisville is a more progressive part of the state, there are still many ignorant people around. Off campus, there are some things to do, but it is not a big city. 4th street live and Bardstown Road area are nice get-a-ways but far from campus. Overall, if I did not have a scholarship to go here, I would not be here. Classes are easier than I thought and I do not feel welcoming in being from out of state. Also, stay away from the west end of town.
