response to the article below me, I had a similar
perception. I've realized this year that Wooster is definitely more
conservative, and definitely less open-minded than I felt it was
last year. Furthermore, while my first semester I was able
to meet a lot of people and felt people were
generally friendly, independent, and self-minded, they became quite cliquey and
conformist by the end of freshman year. However, I don't
think Wooster's any less conformist than any other small LAC...
it comes with the game, I went to a small
high school as well. Yet I have to say despite
the general cliquey-ness, Wooster tends to be at least slightly
friendlier and more diverse than other LAC's. However, do
NOT be fooled into thinking this school is super liberal
and open-minded. When you tour Wooster they will stress that
you can be who you want to be, but in
reality, sororities and fraternities are not exactly influential in their
small numbers but the school tends to exonerate students who
do enter Greek life. Furthermore, people are cliquey, and while
they don't reject people outside of their cliques, it's hard
to get by if you don't have a really secure,
locked-in group of friends by the end of Freshman year.
Most of these cliques are comprised of people exactly like
each other. And the review below me got the safety
situation pretty much down-pat. I would argue that Wooster is
not as conservative as some students whine, but it's definitely
not extremely tolerant of people different than the cookie-cutter mold
small LAC upper-middle-clas student. However, most people will be at
least treated with respect on campus to a degree, if
not in the community. But honestly, this is the real
world, guys, most people are moderates out there. Wooster,
however, will give you a better education than you expected.
I was concerned Wooster was not as “highly ranked” as
some schools I applied to, but honestly, you'll have a
few bad professors here and there but most professors are
accessible, intelligent, and challenge you to critically think in their
classes. I.S. is also as great as it's made out
to be. So basically, Wooster, like any other school is
good and bad. I think if I could go back
and do it again, I'd still choose Wooster out of
the schools I applied to... there's no point in regretting
choosing Woo now.
