Major: Other (This Major's Salary over time)
Marine Technology program was a big waste of time and money. Students gather around instructor as he gives quick demonstration on Mercury Quicksilver diagnostic software. I expected to learn computer diagnostic troubleshooting at NEIT. I got a one class demonstration and no chance to try equipment out on my own. Did not learn anything about Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha or Evinrude.I striped a car engine from a junkyard and put the parts back on it. Teacher was too lazy to walk over to the Automotive building to get a dial bore gauge to show students how to properly measure a cylinder bore. T- gauge and micrometer, just like a backyard mechanic. I never overhauled a Mercruiser or Volvo-Penta engine. We talked a lot about how to repair engines without much "hands-on" training. The instructors were good about extra help and were friendly, but do not properly train you for the marine field.I would not recommend anyone take this program, just get a job at a boat yard and work your way up from scrapping and painting boat bottoms. At NEIT the word they use is entry level tech. I guess mechanic is not technical enough. A marine technician is just a glorified mechanic. The marine industry is a very exclusive industry and you will have a very hard time finding employment with a degree from NEIT. It not NEIT's fault, but most employers do not hire people without manufacturer certification. The only way to get that is to work for an authorized dealer who will send you to training. Fair warning DO NOT WATE YOUR MONEY ON MARINE TECHNOLOGY AT NEIT. IT WAS A VERY COSTLY LESSON FOR ME! Low pay in this trade also 10.00 to 18.00 with 18.00 considered BIG money.
