I transferred to this school this year, thinking it would be an improvement upon my last. I thought the urban environment and down to business feel of the school would be right for me. However, Akron is a dull, lifeless shell of a school. Nearly everyone commutes, leaving little solidarity amongst the student body. As a resident student, I can testify it is absolutely dead on weekends. There is also a good chance you will be robbed at or around your dorm or apartment. As for academics, every single one of their general education classes are the worst kind of watered down, repetitive mush imaginable. None of the teachers seem to have any actual advanced degrees. You are likely to be stuck with a crazy, tenured old person that the university cannot fire but cannot do anything else with for most of your freshman classes. I would also like to address the food on campus. Not only is the food extremely overpriced, if you are a vegan or vegetarian like myself you will find great difficulty continuing this lifestyle using a typical meal plan. Most of the food served is junk food or fried and greasy meats. The university's upper management has managed to leave me feeling sick in my one semester's time here. Racist emails, disrespect for the dead, and other types of faux pas are apparently the norm. I was hoping for an enlightened, cosmopolitan, liberal atmosphere as well as at least a decent education, and Akron delivers on none of those things.
