I will say at the outset that the archives classes are useful. Most of them teach skills that my prior experience has also shown to be of some importance.

That said, if you can speak intelligibly, form an argument, manage a class discussion, and write coherently, this is not the program for you. Admittedly, many acquaintances in other MLS programs find their schools to be painfully simple, but I don't think I'm being too harsh if I say that I found the student body to be that way, too. Online discussions were painful—students were generally unable to form coherent sentences, make a point, or defend an argument. The professors were somewhat better, but were largely impressed by the fact that a supposedly top-notch institution had hired them, and put on airs of actual scholars while being unable to properly punctuate their syllabi.

I will say that in the archives class, theory was granted as much class time as practical skills (arrangement and description, EAD, etc.), but in the general track programs (required, by the way), you'll be poorly served by every class except Reference. If you have a chance, take it with Rodriguez-Mori. He dumbs his class down because it's mostly first years, but he's actually brilliant.

Really, though, if you went to a smart undergrad college, most of the classes will reduce you to tears of boredom and frustration. And the busy work—oy vey!
