Texas A & M University - Commerce

Major: Music Education (This Major's Salary over time)
I am third year music major at TAMU-C, and I am very glad I chose my school. However, I will keep my review objective and honest.?

?Many reviews are saying that the campus is old and outdated. Many places on campus used to be. However, things are quickly being rebuilt and renovated. It is a great time for the school. There is a new multi million dollar music building that is absolutely incredible (the concert hall was designed by the acoustician who designed the meyerson), there is a beautiful student center and recreation center with tons of equipment and lots of activities every day. There are also new freshman dorms that are beautiful. Not to mention the science building, which is extremely nice as well. There are some buildings on campus that are outdated, but they all seem to be being replaced/renovated…except for perhaps Whitley..it's a bit of a mess. And I hear the family housing is ?bad, too. But I have never been there. However, the campus itself is pretty. Lots of flowers, trees, displays, etc.?

As far as the education I am receiving here, I feel that it is very high quality. I am mostly speaking of the music department, because I am a music education major. The classes are not often easy, but they teach you everything you need to know for tests, and all the work seems geared toward what you really need to know to be a quality musician an teacher. The private voice teachers are wonderful and pleasant, and the piano faculty is great as well. It's a very friendly and personal environment. The band directors and instrumental lesson teachers I have worked with have been a delight. As far as classes outside of my major, I have found most of the classes to be helpful and fair, and the professors will really work with you and help you out.?

Concerning campus life, I think TAMU-C does well. There are many free events hosted by the student center and recreation center, such as Salsa Night, Chinese New Year Party, Halloween Party, Winter Wonderland Party ( to name a few), and the events I have attended have been fun with lots of free items and food. There are also many fitness classes offered at the recreation center for a wide range of skill level. There are also many programs, concerts, and banquets. There are many social organizations to join (Greek and non) for a variety of interests and majors.?

The city of Commerce itself is pretty quiet. If you want to party and drink every night, this is probably not the right school for you. There are several bars in Commerce, but only if you like country music or cigarette smoke. However, there are a couple decent restaurants, and they opened a frozen yogurt bar, bakery, and mini golf course fairly recently. Things in the town seem to be growing—it looks as if more interesting places are up and coming.
