Vanderbilt University is not a safe campus. In the short while i was there, I was sexually assaulted by another Vanderbilt Student and heard of many stories of sexual assault taking place on campus. The administrators of the Conduct department of the University more often than not, choose to ignore complaints about sexual misconduct and the atmosphere is fairly depressing. The crime rate on and around campus is fairly high, with peeping, forced fondling, armed robbery and rape only a few of the crimes reported to the Vanderbilt Police department. I would not choose to go there if i were you, namely for safety purposes.

responseI'm stunned after reading your comment. I'm sorry about what happened to you, and I'm glad that you shared your story. I think maybe contacting Senator Tom Harkin and the US education dept. as well as a lawyer. I'm not trying to tell you what to do but out of concern for you and others, I hope that these suggestions can help you. God bless you.
commentTo anyone that does experience unwanted sexual behavior or assault, please please let the REAL police know. I am not talking about the campus police, they're not real officers. Colleges are not their own cities nor did they make the laws. Plus, they are out there to protect their reptuation. As once stated in an SVU Law & Order epsiode, no one wants to send their kids to Rape U, so sometimes cases like these are not handled the way they should be. Meaning, go the doctor's or ER and file a police compliant. Rape is not something that should ever be swept under the rug. If, and hopefully this doesn't happen, your case is not taken seriously-transfer out. Why should you pay $$$$ to a college that doesn't try to punish this type of behavior?

But most importantly, it was not your fault. No matter what people say otherwise, no one asks to be sexually assaulted. Blaming the victim for what he/she did or didn't do is frankly wrong and disgusting. But as a society we do encourage a rape culture where she/her asked for it or deserved it if they were too drunk, careless or wore that outfit. Rape is never okay and why should you even try to hurt someone that is passed out or that wore a mini-shirt? That says something about the attacker and about us.

commentAfter being at Vanderbilt for 3 years, I have heard of 4 rapes occurring. VUPD is, in fact, the REAL police unlike what the other commenter suggested. They have the full power of any police department in the state of Tennessee. All of my interactions with VUPD have been phenomenal, and I truly believe that they have all the students best interests at heart, and carry that will out superbly. We were indeed named one of the most dangerous campuses in America, however the statistics include all incidents occurring at our medical center which is the only Level I Trauma Center in TN, and gets a lot of traffic. The campus overall has never once felt unsafe, and even when I was a freshman, I never once felt unsafe when drunkenly stumbling to the other side of campus, sometimes alone.
