Major: Chemical Engineering (This Major's Salary over time)
There are a lot of different parameters that have to be taken into account when making an assessment of Stony Brook. For starters, this school is ruthless. IT WON'T - make you friends, put anything on a platter, give you the benefit of the doubt, or give you sympathy. There are some seriously competitive - and weird - people at Stony. However, if you go there with the right mindset and work ethic you will have the most exhilarating and satisfying experiences of you life. OK, first things first, I see people saying there are few/no parties there. WRONG! If you want to party and have a good time you can find one any day of the week and get all kinds of weird. HOWEVER it is not the type of deal where you just walk through an open door. Parties do have to be sought out (or created!) at first but it doesn't take long to figure out who to contact or where to go. Another thing is is that when I say it won't make you friends, it won't. If you expect to just mingle with people without making any effort on your part, well you'll be mighty lonely. But is it really that hard to start a conversation? NO! Okay, academics? Yea there is a lot of that there. If you were the smartest kid in your class in highschool you won't be the smartest person there ( unless you're a chemical engineer!!!! :P). But really, the competition is stiff and the professors equally as unsympathetic. If you don't put in 100% you simply won't make it. Oh and are you pre-med? Yea, that's what I thought, so is everyone else there so you gotta deal with the It gets annoying but you get a good laugh when they fail orgo. So what is my overall assessment of Stony Brook. It's awesome. I graduated in may 2011 and miss it every day (and remember I'm a chemical engineer!!!) I did well and managed to party at least three nights a week. The most important piece of advice I can give you is this—this school is absolutely what you make of it, no more, no less. Go in with this mindset and you will love it!
