Since people are much more likely to write a review if they are unhappy, I decided to write one because of my satisfaction with Hartwick College. I'm just finishing up my sophomore year here, and I couldn't be happier. So, let me tell you a little more about the school. Hartwick is a very small campus, only about 1,500 students go here, so this can be a negative or positive thing, depending on your taste. I love going to such a small school, most of the students know a majority of the other students that go here, and it provides us with a sense of community and familiarity. Next, the school IS expensive. Many students find that they can't afford the tuition, but Hartwick does give away many scholarships. Also, I know a lot of students who simply become RA's, because RA's at Hartwick get to live here for free. So, if you can afford to go here, I would encourage you to at least pay us a visit. Next, there's the social life; I'll give you a breakdown of the social scene, because that's what I was looking for when I read reviews on here before I came to Hartwick. So, as I said, everyone pretty much knows everyone at Hartwick, and we have a pretty tight-knit community here. That's not to say that everyone is best friends, but I like to think our students are a lot closer to one another than other schools. In regards to the night life, yes, Oneonta is a small town. However, there is always something to do on the weekends. Frats and sororities throw parties often, and there are many bars that the students go to, so don't think that just because we're a small town means that we don't have a good night life. If partying isn't your scene, the school has tons of events every week/weekend. We have movie showings, sporting events, dorm activities, plays and musicals, etc. Onto the next subject, the actual schooling. Hartwick, I think, is the perfect balance between ridiculously hard and ridiculously easy. Some classes are harder than others, of course, and you have to put the work in to get a good grade, but I find most of the classes to be just the right amount of challenging. It's not so challenging that I can't even do it, but it's not so easy that I don't even have to try. The teachers are generally willing to help the students and most of them genuinely care about your education. However, all teachers are different. I've had some teachers I've loved, and some that I've hated, but that's true of any college. I think the small class sizes help with the teacher-student relationship. The teachers know the students by name, and most students feel comfortable talking with their teachers when they have a concern.Overall, I love Hartwick, and I've had some great experiences so far. Anyone who is considering going here, I would advise you to at least visit the campus and see how you like it.
