Being an alumni and having read others comments, I would like to share my experience at Hostos. I will first begin with the negatives: 1.In my opinion this school definitely caters more to those of hispanic and latino descent. 2. You must continuous and actively evaluate your degree audit. (As a freshman its mandatory that your classes be decided by a counselor and yourself who will tell you what you need). As a result, I could have graduated before 2 years and took classes I had no business taking. 3. SOME don't challenge you.4. Did I mention that they really cater more to HISPANICS and LATINOS. (My first reality of this was at the nurse's office, where admissions stated that I could get my immunizations there, I stood there in that very long line and watched her administer shots to some and continuously turn away others, stating they needed to go to their regular physician or proof that they received the shot. As others were getting impatient and seeing this as well many began to walk away disappointed. Seeing this she then stated in spanish "Don't worry if you can understand what I'm saying right now stay in line, I will not turn you away", "Again if you are latino and you understand me stay in line you will get your shots". On a POSITIVE:1. There are many staff members that are genuine and care about the quality of education. (My 1st bio professor is a botanist at the New York Botanical Garden and has 2 flowers named after her for her discovery, my second bio professor is a dr. doing research at the Mount Sinai College of Medicine where i was privileged to work with him the entire semester while in the LSAMP program. Other science professors works in reputable fields and are extremely knowledgeable and also have discoveries named after them. Through connections of my professor I visited they no.1 retro-virus lab in the country and received a personal tour.)2. They have wonderful programs that bridges you to universities such as the Global Scholar program that gives you intense support and full tuition at Columbia University. They also have such connections for NYU and other wonderful opportunities. 3. Because of my GPA I joined PTK an international honor society and was eligible for many scholarships.4. My GPA also made me eligible for the honors program at Hostos upon successful completion I became a Hostos Scholar which granted me $1500 per semester for completion of my honor project so I began getting paid for going to Hostos. Due to my work in the honors program I also became eligible for a study abroad scholarship and studied macro economics at Shanghai University in Shanghai, China and explored many businesses , locations such as The Great Wall, Mings tomb, Temple of Heaven, Etc… Not only was this all included I was also given an extra $1500 for pocket money which was about $10,500 in their currency.5. Overall if you do your best and proactively search for these opportunities, they are there
