I
am currently a music theater major at UW La Crosse,
but I'm planning to transfer because I want to get
a degree in visual arts instead, and the art department
here is extremely limited. It's nothing to do with
not liking the Theater program, it's just me changing my
mind about life. So here's the good and bad. Good:
As far as Theater at UW
La Crosse goes, the faculty is excellent! They care
about you as a person, and they try to teach
you things that you will be of use to you
in the future. Our music instructors are awesome as well.
They have real-life experience and want to help you
grow as a musician. Some people criticize because it isn't
a difficult program to get in to. Yes, there
are some people who are lackluster performers, but there are
others who are simply incredible. It really comes down
to the old cliche, “You get out of it what
you put into it.” If you work hard here,
you can be great. If you don't, then you'll
just be average. Classmates here, at least in theater, are
friendly and willing to accept anyone. We look out
for each other.
Bad:
I rated this
university low in social life, but maybe that's because I'm
one to party. I guess there is definitely a
lot of night life here if you like beer and
house parties.
Living in the dorms is a
nightmare. People scream and run around like headless chickens while
you're trying to sleep, and they stand around in the
halls drunk. Not cool with me. I want
to come home to some place calm after working my
ass off performing, but that's impossible on a Saturday night.
My neighbors are completely immature and inconsiderate. Hopefully
if you live in the dorms, you have a quiet
floor or you live in Eagle Hall. It's amazing
in there.
One last thing: it's hard to
rate the academics of the university as a whole, because
some classes are fun and challenging, and others are a
complete waste of time. From what I've heard and
experienced, I'd say general education courses are terrible because no
one wants to be there, but courses for your major
are fun.
