My honest opinions of Carson Newman as a student:
  • CN is located in Jefferson City, TN. It is small and laid-back. The stress of a big city doesn't exist here. There are grocery stores, places to eat, and pretty much everything you would need to survive, but nearby Morristown offers more variety if you want it. CN is also located near the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge/Sevierville are. It's about a 40 minute drive from campus, and this area obvioulsy offers all of the shopping, entertainment, and restaurants you could ever want. Knoxville is also about a 40 minute drive from campus, and it has EVERYTHING. If you are an outdoorsy person (which you will be after a couple weeks at CN!) the smokey mountains offers every kind of outdoor activity you can think of. The mountains are beautiful. This place will get into your soul.
  • The campus is pretty big considering the size of CN's student body. It's not the most beautiful campus in the world, but it does feel like home. The dorms are pretty typical, community bathrooms and all. The campus is NOT run down or dirty, as some have described it. Just come for a visit; I fell in love with CN the moment I saw the campus. :)
  • During my college search, I must have visited over a dozen schools, but the people at CN made the biggest impression on me. The people here are amazing. Everyone is striving for excellence, and it shows. I will say that if you want to make friends here, YOU have to take the first step. Friendships don't just happen, you have to try! Definetly get involved on campus every chance you get, whether you volunteer, join intramurals, or just attend a dorm activity. You'll meet your best friends here, but you have to try.
  • This is a Christian school, Southern Baptist to be specific. You need to know this before you commit to come here. There is nothing more frustrating than people complaining about required chapel services or the Christ-centered mindset here at CN. God is defintly at work here, and it shows everyday.
  • FOOD. The selection at the caf isn't the best, but what they do offer is really good. Always a salad bar! Besides the caf, you can use your meal plan at the Eagle's Nest (snack bar), Java City (COFFEE!), or at the bakery on campus. Great food here at CN.
  • Academics are challenging. There's no scraping by here at CN. You have to work hard to succeed. The profesors here are always willing to help, even if it takes hours. CN offers free tutoring, advising, and counsel if you need it. CN is hardwired to help you acheive your academic goals.
  • I can't really say much about financial aid at CN. The only thing I know is the financial aid package they gave me. I am a TN resident, so I did receive my lottery scholarship in addition to CN's aid. Simply put: CN gave me a shcolarship, grant, and work study. My schooling is almost all paid for (and I only got a 25 on my ACT). A public school would have been alot more expensive.
  • This is a really great college that I would choose again! You should consider Carson Newman College as your school.
