I went to the smfa because it was the cool art school and i thought i wanted to be a cool art star…so it seemed good. Right away I found that the people often take themselves way too seriously…they seem to have to have to…supporting their art ideas with a thick wall of "its serious, conceptual art" when really what it is is something the public would call very abstract. Mostly intended for shock value. Any deviations culturally seemed poorly understood. The faculty was not accomodating or friendly very much at all in terms of art, as they were so orthodox. I can say it was a blast because the school has a fun environment fo anything goes and encourages a lot of out of the box thought, but it seemed to me in the classes, this freedom was perverted, and givent oo either strict rules of avant garde or to just plain ludicrousness. Do not expect them to accpet an intelligent thinker even if you sympathise with this atmosphere. You will be nnot only diappointed but intellectually scarred. You should find a better ground…but the temptingness of it is that it provides so much freedom otherwise, the city, away from annoying parents, but in the end, it can be a slippery slope into madness. Conform to their brand of insaniuty or leave. every student is required to make something that looks like an MGMT video. be warned. this is what they think is cool and that is the most important thing at the school as far as faculty goes. I tried to use the school as a spirngboard to launch my independent art career and it didnt work that well. I found myself spinning ym wheels just as badly. And "review boards" are definitely not good for my health. Id say the faculty was the problem, i didnt get along with them, and many of them, not at all. the dean of students also is very very very annoying to talk to and he made me so mad. How are they annoying…? Naysayers, plain and simple. You have a viewpoint that needs respect, and not a parental NO, for a school founded on freedom of choice, it wasnt, and everyone acted like nannyish in matters where they shouldnt be.
