Salem State's extra-curricular activities are all extremely small, inactive, or essentially nonexistent. The student body is too small for students to really be exposed to much, if any, diversity. Although I do very much like the people who I have met here, the school is small enough that I feel that I am just settling with people who I get along with, rather than meeting people who I share common interests with. As a particularly ambitious and active student, I feel that Salem State has not been a great place for my social development. For social life at Salem State, I can do drugs and listen to dubstep with other people, make friends through smoking pot, or you can smoke cigarettes and meet others who also smoke butts. I'm not bashing these activities, but they aren't for me and they shouldn't be my only options for social outlets.

The greatest benefits about Salem State would definitely be the price and the small class sizes. I decided to transfer to UMass Amherst for this coming Fall, and I believe that the small class sizes at Salem State are really the only aspect that I will miss.

Academically, I would not say that Salem State was particularly challenging, but I am a very intelligent individual so I wouldn't expect to experience much rigor at any school. Also, I will say that I DID learn quite a lot from certain courses. For my professors, I can genuinely say that I did not have any who I was not happy with (however, I did use ratemyprofessor for every single course that I chose).

The main reason that I am transferring is because my social and intellectual developments are of great priority for me. I feel that I really did not have a social life at Salem State. The majority of my time was spent studying alone. I did meet many people, but beyond meeting the people who I did get along with, there really weren't any opportunities to go out and meet more new and interesting people. At a university, I should be inundated with opportunities to meet people who have similar interests.

Plenty of people are happy at this school, but it certainly isn't right for me.
