Social Life:

The WORST thing about Elmhurst is the TERRIBLE social life. If you are not in a sport or sorority then you are an outcast. Campus feels like a post apocalyptic world on the weekends where you feel everyone else died because everyone goes home on the weekends. Expect to do nothing on the weekend as cafeteria is barely open and there are no interesting weekend activites because of the fact that no one is around (it's a vicious cycle).

Clubs & Activites:

Everyone says join clubs/activities to make friends and in fact, I actually did join greek life and multiple clubs and still didn't make many meaningful connections. (lots of cliques too). You are probably thinking oh this person must be weird and not able to make friends even after they did all of that effort. When in fact, i'm an open-minded, attractive, normal female. (not to sound conceited, just trying to stress the fact that i am a normal person wanting to make the best out of their college experience)

I have done everything in my power to make the best out of my time in elmhurst. I take advantage of enjoying shops and food down town, traveling on the metra to chicago (i definitely recommend this, and experience more than just the tourist spots!), attending campus lectures and activities, and going to parties (rare, they usually are large house parties where a particular sport throws it ex. football party, basketball party, etc). Note: most clubs (art, psych, etc.) barely have any people attend, and sometimes don't even meet.

Elmhurst is a very SAFE choice, like an extension of high school.

I have attended elmhurst two years (too long). I hated my first semester at elmhurst but hesitated to transfer because I was hoping elmhurst would improve, but it really stays the same.

I know some people that love elmhurst and the best I can describe their personalities are people who- take advantage of the small numbers and rise to become presidents of clubs or are really "in" with faculty, people who like safe choices who don't want big changes and are satisfied with the simple, plain life, football players thrive here because of their large numbers, and I always thought that guys must like it because there are so many pretty girls, girls outnumbering the guys.

The good things:

  • I met my current best friend there
  • freshmen orientation is a fun time
  • the food is good for healthy eaters (what other school can you get a legit salmon dinner) (if you eat junk food, then the roost is for you)
  • students love the study abroad program
  • There are some brilliant students that go here and I have felt inspired by some of my professors but for me, elmhurst is not a place that I ended up feeling proud to call my school. If you are like me- someone who wants to see new faces all the time, to hangout with groups of friends on the weekend, who wants to feel apart of a community, to feel challenged to be the best by others in their degree program, to have college open up a new world of new experiences then don't be afraid to go somewhere that can provide those things.

If you do like elmhurst and feel like it could be right for you, by all means go!! and if it doesn't work later, don't be afraid to transfer because it is never too late to change your life!

Best of luck to you and your college search!
