I'm not going to sit here and take the time to fill out an A-F grade for the university/social interactive portion of this page-I was a HPU student two years ago and feel that my opinion on those categories would be irrelevant since I haven't been a student there in a long time.I transferred from high point after my freshman year, and I'm not going to lie, it was the best decision I ever made. It has changed the course of my life for the better, and I have met people who make me wonder how I ever functioned without them because they are so important to me. At HPU I struggled to fit in and make strong friendships with people. Yes I made my fair share of freshman mistakes (too much partying, poor grades), but even when I turned over a new leaf and lead a much more positive lifestyle I did not notice much of a difference. The second I transferred I clicked in at my new school. I made a ton of friends without even having to try too hard because the people were friendly, and normal. The school I transferred to is totally different from HPU- its 4x the size, is a state school, and has basic amenities, yet I am a hundred times happier. Not a day has gone by since I transferred that I thought, The academics are pretty much the same as HPU, a bit harder, but for the most part not too dissimilar. Yes at times I have often wondered what my life would be like had I chosen to stay at HPU. The truth of the matter is, I would probably be doing exactly what I did my freshman year, sitting in my dorm room on my laptop looking at pictures of everyone else I know loving college. Once people find there place at HPU, which is typically in a fraternity or sorority, their friends are set in stone for their four years at the school. I realize nothing would have changed since I was a freshman.Had I acted differently as a freshman things could have turned out differently. I might have made good friends, had less drama, and found my place in a student but I won't know because that didn't happen. My suggestion to those of you who are about to attend HPU as a freshman, or are in H.S. thinking about applying, is to be on your best behavior your first semester. Don't party too much, hookup with a massive amount of people, and get terrible grades. Be aware of everyone you are and want to be friends with. If you can do those four things, you could have a positive experience.Yes I could sit here and beat myself up over the opportunities I could have had at HPU, but I realized its not worth it. Everything happens for a reason. Every once in a while I do think about how easy it was to walk to everything at HPU but that's about it. Every once in a while, I will talk to someone from HPU who says that they now love the school, but that it took a lot of time, and that they do wish they had transferred, but its too late as they are deep into their college education. High Point University is most certainly an acquired taste. When reading through reviews on this website read all of the positive and negative comments, and know that all of them are true to a certain degree. Know that the people who had positive stuff to say are probably in a greek organization, and the negative comments are from someone who may have not given HPU a fair chance. So read all of the comments, and take them for what they are worth.Note to all current HPU students who are contemplating transferring…DO IT! It's a fresh start, and you can only make things better for yourself. Plus you know if you transfer and it doesn't work, HPU will take you back.
