Major: Music - Performance (This Major's Salary over time)
Do not attend this school's music program unless you are a steel pan major. The large ensembles are a joke, and the professors who run them care more about their image than the students' education. Top music schools such as the Peabody Conservatory stress a non-competitive nature. This is not the case at NIU. I have seen many students be placed in ensembles without auditioning over students who put in the time to audition. This is neither fair nor realistic. If I don't audition to the CSO, I will not get a spot…They have more of an emphasis on wind band than they do Philharmonic due to the low amounts of string players who attend the school. This does not help the performance major very much as beyond the military, there really is no such thing as a professional band (at least, not in the same amount as other types of ensembles). The world music and jazz programs are wonderful. However, if you want a complete and intensive education, stay away from NIU at all costs.
