New Paltz is kind of a strange school. On paper the school looked like everything that I wanted (relatively cheap, beautiful location, cool town and not far from the city which is where I am from). Unfortunately, I just really don't like it here.

The students at New Paltz are very friendly, however a lot of kids are just duds. I have met very few people here who are politically active, or even politically aware. Many times I have caught myself explaining things that I thought was just common knowledge. Considering it is a college campus, there is very little political activity. If there does happen to be any, it is created by the same students over and over. I've never really had trouble making friends in the past, but at New Paltz I've found very few people who I have connected to. Not to sound snobby but the school is almost entirely made up of somewhat ignorant and naive long-Islanders, as well as some Hudson valley/Poughkeepsie folks). You will definitely hear many coffee-talk accents at this school.

The professors have overall been decent. I get the feeling that a lot of them have dumbed-down their courses due to their student's disinterest in learning anything. I've been in many classes where it literally seemed like the professors were pulling teeth in order to get any kind of response out of their students. Most classes I've been in have been hilariously easy. My high school was probably 5 times more challenging than this school has been. Ah well.

New Paltz as a town is cool. There are a ton of great restaurants in town (which is great because the food on campus is disgusting). There are lots of jobless hippies hanging out in town who personally annoy the crap out of me but to each their own, right? There is also an absurd number of creepers who come to New Paltz on the weekends and hang out at the bars. There have already been a few instances of sexual assaults not far from my dorm room in the year that I've been at this school. As a female, I would highly suggest using the buddy system and being wary of some of the local bars as they appear to be roofy infested. I guess this goes for any college town. Aside from the bars, the nightlife at this school is not too interesting. The parties are all terrible frat parties which students learn to stop going to by the end of their first semester. Most people seem to just hang out in their rooms or off campus houses within their own group of friends.

Overall I'm sure some people may love New Paltz. It just isn't the school for me. As another reviewer wrote, the school is full of mediocrity. The artists in the art department are not particulary good, the mainstage musical last semester was cringe-worthy bad, and the glee club performance I saw might have been the funniest shit I've ever seen. And not funny in a good way. I guess you'll just have to come and see for yourself.
