Shimer was a fantastic school, and I'm very happy to have been there. There are, of course, problems—many of which I would say are related to its size: lack of funding, enthusiastic but underdeveloped student services, lack of space, etc… But all of those issues are so minor when compared to the school's ethos and quality of education. The community, which is built through both the academics and the valued shared governance, is rooted in exactly the sort of spirit one needs for a transformative education. The faculty is truly astounding, both in their qualifications and the degree to which they care about their students. I would say that the one thing about graduate school Shimer didn't prepare me for was the fact that most professors are, in fact, professors, and not teachers, facilitators or terribly interested in your welfare. Shimer's facilitators are all of these things and more. The school has a rich history and tradition. The academics leaves the student with a remarkably solid background in the Western canon and promotes critical thinking. Shimer for every fault it may have is a fantastic school, and I highly recommend other students check it out.
