This review is not about the school (NMSU), but rather about a course that is designated "Viewing a Wider World" where students are directed to take classes that will broaden their perspectives outside of their discipline. The class is Sociology 361V, Rural America. Unless you are a glutton for punishment, do not take this class with Prof. Hovey. Very, very detached instructor and very demanding. Extremely draconian and subjective grading. The prof wants the students to "live" the class like her and seeks student's validation by way of agreeing with her. The text is pitiful and you will not get much out of it, unless you care to hear only one slanted side of the story. I was very disappointed because it could have been a good class because of the subject, but it fell far from the mark. Don't expect very much help or instruction and be prepared to be much more concerned about formatting papers to ASA standards, than on the content. The class and instructor produced very poor overall grades for nearly everyone. Other than that, it was okay.
