Date: Dec 20 2012
Major: Computer Science (This Major's Salary over time)
Background:

I am a computer science major who dreams of working for the big software companies (Google, Apple, Intel, Microsoft, etc). I received the full tuition scholarship and planned to complete undergraduate here, then go elsewhere for a graduate degree. However, I have become disappointed after one year with the lack of opportunities to push myself and plan to transfer to Ann Arbor soon (I'm a sophomore credit-wise).

Pro's:

  • Very gratuitous scholarships (31 ACT is automatic full tuition)
  • Small classes, individual attention (very useful in some subject areas)
  • Generally easy coursework
  • Professors are knowledgeable (one must assume, many in engineering don't speak English very well)
  • Great internship / co-op opportunities if you are in mechanical engineering (Ford, GM, Chrysler are right next-door)
  • Con's:

  • Computer science department is a bit sub-par (Visual Basic is a level 300 class???)
  • Students must actively seek out opportunities to socialize, a major contributor to this problem is the lack of dorms (though dorms are being built soon)
  • The school has limited funds for computer labs, research, etc., so don't expect to be surrounded by cutting-edge technology
  • There are MANY return-to-school adults in classes, which isn't necessarily bad, but doesn't help typical-aged college students find social groups
  • In General:

  • Great school for mechanical engineering
  • Sub-Par for computer science or other majors that require cutting-edge technology
  • Hard to find a social group, but most eventually do
  • The math department is great: rigorous courses with excellent and approachable professors
  • Good choice as a "stepping stone" college (transfer elsewhere or go on to graduate school elsewhere)
