I go to Poly as well and I could not agree more with your review..I was just curious to hear others' opinions and while I LOVE the beauty of SLO, the school itsself sucks for those seeking a more theoretical approach to education. We are all pretty much sheep being fed information to memorize so we can get hired which is great for money but not great for expanding knowledge or preparing for grad school. I am switching my major just so I can graduate earlier and move on from this place. I thought it would be everything I ever wanted but was a big let down when I got here…female transfer from bay area as well. I prefer the Northern CA vibe much more and socially, people here are pretty weird. I've never had difficulty finding a social group until this place. |
I Know! I am back in the bay as of now… applied too late for UCSC, so now i am considering eating my words and returning to SLO. Just Curious, what major are you changing to? I also consider myself more of a theoretical, inquisitive thinker rather than someone who likes banging out problem sets. I was looking a physics, cultural anthropology (human ecology), philosophy.. or just doing Gen Eng. If i come back down there ill be your friend! |
I would definitely say the CLA (college of liberal arts) is the most accepting and welcoming to all…I changed from AEPS--> Sociology after canceling my change into ENVM Mgmt and Protection. So maybe now I have a lot less labs, science, math but also a lot less stress. My happiness in daily life is more important to me…I want to get my masters in public health which i can do with this degree or ENVM so I'm glad I made the change. Come back, get into the CLA and be happy with me!! facebook.com/ckkatz or _email_removed_ |
I don't think you should be an engineer… |
Major: Engineering Department (This Major's Salary over time)
I went to Cal poly for Gen Engineering for 2 and a half years. I really have nothing to show for my time there besides lots of math and science academic course credit. Coming from northern California, I consider this college just "okay" in every aspect. The parties were entirely greek dominated. The people are either douchey or conceited girls who seek out the douche's approval. I most of the people that I considered to be my friends quickly became acquantices and I ended up with maybe one or two close friends from the time I was there.I was only somewhat sure that I wanted to do engineering. I thought of myself as creative and curious person that excelled in school but what I quickly learned was that these things mean very little when pretty much everything I did was evaluated with a test, and I mean everything. Go to this school if you are mature and know exactly what you want to study. I was way too curious about the world around me to tolerate putting my head down and assuming a submissive position while they did u know what. For what its worth, the school is in beautiful location and the girls are fucking gorgeous. Id say that this school is better to transfer into once you are 21 and can go down town. Otherwise you will be subject to joining a fraternity or becoming marginalized in a superficial and domineering socal mindset of a school. I mountainbiking here is decent, not the greatest, not the worst. Surfing is good really only in fall. Im looking at switching to UCSC. From what I gather they have people that are actually interested in life. The Mountainbiking and the surfing are world class. The girls might have a bit of pit hair, but I think i can manage. :)
