Major: Computer Science (This Major's Salary over time)
I decided to go here because it is a Christian college and I thought that the kids here would be nicer than at a secular college. I was disappointed as many kids here are snooty and quick to criticize any thought that conflicts with their Christian beliefs. However, there are some friendly kids at Messiah College and I am sure that there are snooty kids at every college. Moreover, I was forced to take a multitude of gen-ed classes and not enough classes for my Computer Science major. Most of the gen-ed's ended up being a complete waste of my time and money as I will never use what I learned in them outside of college. For example, in my theology gen-ed, I had to memorize statistics for European countries' religion even though there is no reason why I should apply that to a career in Computer Science. Because I spent much of my college career learning gen-ed's instead of classes useful for my major, I feel that Messiah has not properly prepared me for a career in Computer Science. In attending a career fair during my senior year, the career coaches asked me if I knew certain programming languages and I had to answer no to a lot of those questions because Messiah's Computer Science program only teaches two programming languages. I am also one of the smartest kids in my major which makes me increasingly frustrated that I cannot find a job for after college. In addition, Messiah College does a very poor job at making living comfortable in its dorms. During my second and third year at Messiah, I had to deal with unbearable heat during the spring because the A/C in my dorms did not work. Also, during all four of my years at Messiah, I repeatedly had to deal with very slow or nonfunctional internet. I feel that since I had to pay around $35,000 total a year at Messiah, I should have been provided better living conditions.Overall, I believe that I should have attended a college other than Messiah. While the facts that many kids at Messiah are snobby and many of Messiah's living conditions are uncomfortable do annoy me, the biggest issue I have with it is that I did not receive a very good education from it. I feel that if I attended a non-liberal arts college, then I would not have been bombarded with gen-ed's and thus I could have learned more about the Computer Science major that would later help me greatly in my career. Therefore, if you are looking for a college to attend and you want to learn a technical field such as engineering, computer science or mathematics, I would not recommend choosing Messiah College.
