As an alumna and now parent, I am not encouraging my college-aged children to consider attending WC. It is very small, VERY expensive, and truly in the middle of nowhere. As charming as Chestertown may be for thirty-somethings looking to spend a weekend antiquing, the often-repeated line that the college enjoys a "prime" location from DC, B'more, & Philly always gave me pause, as they are all nearly 2 HOURS away! For a college student, particularly one without a car, it is absurd to count this as a benefit. Chestertown is an insular, rural community that does not appreciate the financial and cultural benefits the college offers them. Academically, WC's strength is in its strong writing component and probably prepares students more for graduate school than anything else. Socially, in my day, it was elitist and cliquey. Perhaps that's changed over the years? The price tag is exorbitant, and for what? Few people outside of the mid-Atlantic have ever heard of Washington College. Less expensive universities have much more to offer in the way of diversity of population, academic majors, and extra-curricular activities. If I could go back in time and do things differently, I would never have attended Washington College.
