I feel I have to leave a review on this school because I mostly used to reviews to determine to go there in the first place. I don't want anyone else to be steered wrong like I was.

If you are looking for a safe, respectful college with good people and a faculty who cares, do. not. go. here. I am serious about this and I am honest - this school is not for the academically-inclined, good person.

If you are looking for a party college with people who are, for the most part, not academically-inclined and not particularly friendly, but looking for a good time, you are set. Danger and intrigue walk in the hallowed shadows of this college's buildings; if you are female, do NOT walk outside alone anywhere on or around campus after dark. Males, you also run the risk of being mugged around this time.

Now, I might lose a lot of people around this point, but this needs to be mentioned because it is such a big part of the college and what it stands for - ethnicity. Particularly African Americans. This school's first and foremost priority is its African American students. If you are African American, great! This is a great place to be! If you are not, be warned - there is a lot of racism against anyone who is not black. This includes students who are white and not normally targeted for this type of thing. You will get it from all angles - other students, the faculty, the police, and the administration.

And please, please dear God, if you are not black, do not get into any sort of argument, trouble, or problems with someone who is. It will ALWAYS be your fault. This includes robbery, fights, attempted rape, or anything else that the other student did. The absolute only way for you to come out of it fine is to not put yourself in a situation to get robbed, fought with, or raped to begin with.

Now this school is not all bad. In fact, there is a lot of good that I have found, particularly in the staff of the Education department. If you are fine with the racism, know how to stay away from danger, and you really want a party-filled experience but still be able to graduate, this is the school for you. Living in the dorms or the apartments all lined up right next to each other is a whole lot of fun. I highly recommend some dorming experience for everyone. My best memories from college were all made in the dorms.

If you do not feel comfortable with what you read above, do not go to NIU. I was as honest as I could be because I want you to know what you are getting into before you go. Good luck with choosing your college! And may the odds be ever in your favor. :P
