The University of Findlay

Given the chance to choose to go to Findlay again, I would not. I attended the equine studies program, specifically hunter jumper and before that, a year in western. The western program is wonderful if that is the discipline you seek to pursue. I have several friends who either started their own business or went on to work for The American Quarter Horse Foundation, etc. The hunter jumper program really lacked staff-wise while I was there. I have heard the new staff are much better. The main campus was simply dangerous after dark. One friend was raped at a party, one was attempted to be raped. I was followed to my car at only about 9pm and one night a knife was stuck in my tire. I feel that security did do their job so I'm not sure of why there was so much violence. I've heard the surrounding town has a high drug rate. I do feel like the hunter jumper equine program has a lot of snootiness from upperclassmen and staff alike. As a fairly experienced rider I was disappointed in being held back during riding class because my fellow riders weren't on the same level. I felt that the arena should be larger for holding several classes at once. I also wanted to have a lot more discussion in my classroom horse lectures but I found that it was more of a hand-out and slide show kind of deal. I feel that the school is too expensive as well for what it offers. The campus is very pretty and many of the dorm rooms are very modern and updated. My social life revolved going into town to the local icecream and chocolate shop or watching movies with my friends on their bunk beds. We also would occasionally go to the local club and coming from a big city I was very happy with the prices of drinks. I had excellent friends while I was there, for the majority. One note I will add; I have a mental illness known as Borderline Personality Disorder. When I attended Findlay I was aware that I had a problem but thought my symptoms had gone away. When I began to have a bad interation with my medications, the barn staff were not understanding, even after being explained. The school lacks a good counselor for any major problems and the surrounding area has poor psychiatrists. Because mental illness so often strikes people in their early 20's I am always dumbfounded by the lack of support and knowledge of the university. I did not tell most people what was wrong due to my impression of their close-mindedness and general snobbery. I wish I'd had a better support group on campus or else I probably would have stayed and completed my college education.
