My experience at Saint Mary's has been both positive and negative. Negative because this is not a place that values or understands the concept of diversity. The students have a passive aggressive attitude towards anyone they perceive as different. That is to say, anyone that is not white and upper middle-class. The professors are intelligent and they are willing to work with you. I honestly believe they want you to be a capable and confident woman but some of them are extremely condescending. Classes are expected to be somewhat challenging and most students strive to get good grades. Having said that, if you are not white and upper-middle class it can become a very lonely place for you because other students will not want to interact with you and you are left with the choice of joining their "multicultural clubs" or not participating at all. I chose not to participate at all because their "multicultural clubs." These clubs are just a false facade of diversity and understanding. It doesn't really solve the underlying problem. Most of these students have never been exposed to other types of people, including other poor whites from more liberal states. Overall, its a very lonely place for a woman of color, or a woman with a broader experience in life. I'm not sure that the education is worth the isolation.
