I was on an athletic scholarship to Southern and to be quite honest, it was the only reason why I stayed. I fell in love with the campus when I first saw it. It's beautiful. The students are nice, always speaking to you even if they don't know you. Unfortunately, the way Southern operates negates all the positive aspects. Financial aid is the worst process I have ever experienced. I waited 16 hours one time in the financial aid line, with all my financial aid being done the previous semester! I swear to you I'm not lying, and I wasn't the only one waiting.I was forced to wait because of system errors when they "upgraded" to a new database. The administration is just as bad. They don't want to be bothered with. They have bad attitudes and are lazy. Don't expect to be challenged academically at Southern. My freshman English class was the same as my English class as a junior in high school.Professors give you work just to make it look like they're working.I can honestly say I put little effort into my school work and still graduated with honors. The political science program is ok. The down side is that the program sets you up for law school and doesn't show you any other career options. Also, faculty members don't really help you out. You pretty much have to figure stuff out on your own without guidance. When it came time to graduate and I wanted to explore my career options, no one helped me which was very frustrating. Bottom line, if you want to go to law school the political science department is the way to go.If you're going to Southern for athletics, don't. I had to pay for all of my equipment and uniforms. What NCAA Division 1 team has to do that? My team also won our conference championship but did not get our championship rings. Unfortunately, my team was not the only team to experience such disappointment. The athletic department is a waste of time and they do not care about their athletes. Had I have known this before, I wouldn't have traveled 1600 miles to attend Southern. The upside is that there is always something to do on campus. Greek life has a strong influence at Southern so there are always parties or programs to attend. If you're looking for a University that you can ease your way through and be sociable, Southern is the place to go.
