This place is a glorified bible college, really. The rules are absurd. I can't believe nobody has brought up clean room checks yet. That's right; your room has to be clean to your RA's specifications or else you get a fine. You could even get written up, which opens you up to a whole new world of disciplinary action…for not having a clean enough room. The University, on the whole, seems to care only about its image. They're seen and hold themselves up to be sort of the flagship school in the Nazarene college world, and they'll be damned if anything the least bit "controversial" sullies this pristine image. The bubble-like, alternate universe a lot of the people here (from students all the way on up) can by mind blowing. They charge you an arm and a leg (for what, I don't know) and yet are about as helpful as a toothache when it comes to getting you money. I think I speak for at least a plurality of kids when I say that you always seem to come up a few thousand short. Nothing's ever open. We have to pay (or find loans and scholarships) for not quite $40k, and yet the cafeteria isn't always open (it's closed far more often than not, unlike at state schools), the library isn't always open (same), and the whole damn campus practically shuts down from Friday evening until Monday morning. This is frustrating as hell if you have things you need to do or print, or even if you just get hungry. I suppose their assumption is that everyone just goes home for the weekend. That assumption is stupid.

Don't get me started on the "Christianity" aspect. Their trillion rules aren't informed by Christianity. They're informed by conservatism. The two aren't the same thing. I don't recall reading anywhere in my Bible Jesus saying anything about not wearing shorts to class, strictly limiting contact between the sexes, going to chapel twice a week on pain of monetary losses, or just about any of the other rules they stress so much here. If you're lookin to go into ministry, or you're the super-innocent slap-happy "Christian" type, then be my guest. Everyone else, don't waste your time.

commentI am sorry that your experience at Olivet has been so negative. While I do agree with you on a few of your points, I think that if you look back at what we signed in our application here you will see that a lot of these rules and guidelines are laid out in black and white. I do not believe that it is a matter of salvation if you attend Chapel, wear shorts to class, or spend one on one time with someone from the opposite sex, I do think that they are trying to help us make good choices. I hated the rules when I was a freshman as well, but as a senior now, I can see why they have those rules. Experience and hindsight can change things.

If you do not like the school or feel so negatively, I would either find people who do like it and talk to them, or find a school that fits your wishes more. Olivet has given me a great platform to build my life off of. I hope that you can see that someday.

And as a side note, I am not a ministry major, or a "super-innocent slap-happy Christian type". Please do not generalize me.
