Hello OP: I was a student at UWaterloo back years ago. I have to disagree with you on this becasue I hate this university and I am an Asian. But I agree on everything that you said other than the first sentence. This university is nothing more than a cash grab. And I spoke less English in UWaterloo than when I was back in the home country. When I need to speak English in UWaterloo, the other person have so thick accent that nobody can understand. (Most student body are Chinese, Indian, Korean and Russian) If you come to this university to learn the Canadian/Western culture, you come to the wrong place. You will not encounter any culture and will not meet any friend in this university as you will be just stuck in the library to study all day long. Your best friend is going to be your textbook. Not the mention your textbook is useless and overpriced. |
I'm a student graduating soon, and I completely agree with the OP's statement. Most of the TA's I've had (in nanotechnology engineering, at least) are generally Chinese, Korean or Indian; I've never encountered a Caucasian TA. Sadly, many of the professors hire Masters or Ph.D students (or for any research opportunities in general) directly from their original institution in their home country (most professors did their undergraduate degree in their home country, such as China, and did their graduate schooling in Canada). It's simply a cash-grab; in Waterloo's engineering program, for instance, you'll be paying quite a lot of money. If you make minimum wage, which will be extremely likely happen on your first few co-op terms, you may not make enough to pay a semester's worth of tuition. Anyways, to illustrate the OP's point, my ethnicity is Chinese. I was born here, and so were my parents, so I never learned Mandarin or Cantonese. I can understand when ordering food at a restaurant that they may ask me in Mandarin what I'd like and I understand that's a common mistake to make. HOWEVER, it's ridiculous because even when I go to a TA to ask for help on an assignment (or even working in Toronto in a co-op job) they'll start speaking to me in Mandarin! Even if you're "one of them", if you don't speak their language or share their same culture, you'll also be a victim - in fact, you'll get treated EVEN WORSE than a Caucasian person would have! I agree with the OP, it's only worth it if you're an Asian fresh off the boat. |
