I graduated in 1988, and her review is spot-on. It makes me sad because my daughter is applying to schools this fall, and DePauw could be a good choice, but it sickens me the place still ranks as a top "party school" with such s small student body. I want a better environment for my daughter, even if it means attending a lower-ranking school. Yes, there is alcohol on most campuses, but the degree of abuse at DPU just hasn't changed enough. By the way—my son is at Yale, so I'm no "dummy" in knowledge of high caliber schools and know drinking goes on there as well, but the pressure to fit in by imbibing isn't the same. My younger one won't be at an Ivy and perhaps not even DPU's tier, but hopefully she won't end up with a life forever changed as a result of peer pressure to binge drink. |
Major: Chemistry (This Major's Salary over time)
They Offered 160k in merit and academic scholarships. Out of 250k that is a serious offer. However, DePauw is in denial when it comes to its Greek Life. 80% plus is the dominating way of life on this campus. Other grads that you will meet at "Friends and Family" receptions (you should definitely attend) are very polite and honest, to a degree. When pressed about how they enjoyed campus, if they were not a member of Greek Life, the answer was evasive and eventually negative. Which compelled me to probe further…They are treated like social outcasts. Life is too short for these games. Clicks should remain in grade school. Not encouraging! It did not help DePauw's image when the student campus guide was nursing a severe hangover and bragging about the amount of alcohol that was consumed on Tuesday…it was now Friday; to each their own, but straighten the hell up for guests. This was during an orientation visit. What a rollercoaster feeling, going from elation when DePauw accepted me, to realizing they are a hot mess in need of guidance. Try telling your parents that you will not be attending what is possibly the best College in Indiana because they cannot get their sh*t together. Better to know ahead of time as this kind of investment is life altering. My advice is steer clear until DePauw cleans house. Conversely, if you are a binge drinker from a well-to-do family who likes humiliating others, you have found home. I really wanted to attend DePauw. However, I earned full rides at IU, ISU and IUPUI. Sadly, my dream of going to DePauw will be denied for my own well-being, I changed my mind and chose one of the other schools. Good Luck on your decision.
