Prescott College allows students to form their own individualized degrees within departments, based on guidelines and in consultation with academic advisors. This is very empowering as one simply doesn't take a predetermined package of courses. The experiential element is a part of most courses, especially those that take place in the field, such as at the college's world class field station in Kino Bay, Sonora, Mexico, on the Gulf of California. The small class size (usually no more than 12) gives students the opportunity to ask questions, have discussions, and give presentations. Students can also take Independent, or Mentored, Studies, which allows them to branch out beyond the curriculum and even do graduate-level independent research. All students are required to do a Senior Project, which is a demonstration of their competence in their area of study. For a small college, the curriculum can be limited in certain areas, but I have had no problems finding more than enough courses in the Environmental Studies Department.
