Funding is almost nonexistent. There appears to be an expectation that you will pay for your first year, and possibly then some. That is if you get a TA or RA position - roughly half of my class originally hoped to complete a PhD, but dropped to a Master's. Funding was cited as a primary concern by most. I have witnessed several students have their funding reduced or cut entirely, despite producing publications and making progress on their thesis/dissertation. In each instance, the professors indicated a lack of available funding. I additionally knew of a student working a part-time job doing non-scientific work in order to make ends meet, which is completely unheard of at other schools. Furthermore, several of the professors appear overworked due to lack of TAs, and several graduate students served as TAs without tuition reimbursement (that was effectively their funding). Why the department is so stingy despite appearing to have the same income as departments at other universities, I have no idea.

The undergraduate program is actually quite excellent. But for graduate school, just don't go here. If you do not get in anywhere besides MTU for graduate school, you should consider an alternative, such as waiting a year to reapply to other schools, or seeking a position in industry.
