Bennington is not the school it is advertised to be, at least not for the majority of its students. Some people come to Bennington and find themselves—they are active in the community (what little community exists) and manage to receive a fantastic education in their chosen field. Most Bennington students, however, are not capable of this. I think a lot of people come to Bennington thinking "small school" means 1000-2000 students, not, like, 700. (Entering classes tend to be "large" but it is guaranteed at Bennington that at least two people you are close to will drop out their first term, and the number keeps gowing up basically right up until graduation. Just how small the school really is makes Bennington's retention rate seem pretty pathetic.) If you are mentally ill—beware. If you need to see a therapist or psychiatrist while at school, avoid psych services basically at all costs. It's very easy to isolate yourself at Bennington, which can make living with a mental illness dangerous. Administration is not very understanding of mental illness and is unforgiving when it comes to victims (you WILL be blamed). Everyone knows each other and I would say that everyone, in general, "likes" most people on campus or at least can tolerate them; that said, this makes it easier to wind up spending 3 full days in VAPA while you cry over your project and have little to no human contact. It's easy to become obsessive. The ability to study, for the most part, whatever you want is a lot more responsibility than, at least, I thought. By graduation I was teaching myself while using my professors as resources, which I personally found to be of great use. I had a terrible, shitty time at Bennington for the most part, but the good times were amazing and the education one of a kind.
