Honestly, if you're really thinking about coming to GMU, I'd strongly advise you to consider some other options first.

First and foremost, however, this is a decent school academically. Not the best, but pretty good. If you live around the area and want to commute, this is really your best option for academics. I've met some really interesting professors here who really do care about what they're teaching. Do they care about you? Some do, some couldn't give jack shit; it's college, so…

The campus is somewhat nice; basically what you'd expect from a commuter school.

Most of my problems with this place come from the people.

Reader beware: many people are NOT nice here, at least from my own experience. I cannot even begin to count how many times I've been walking on campus or been to Southside or someplace and got harassed by arrogant, sadistic assholes. And yes, that includes some of the adults that work here. Others will give you very ugly facial expressions if you happen to look in their direction for a split second. You may try to talk to people you don't know; some will be receptive, some will be shy, but still try to talk to you, most will want you to fuck off.

COME HERE WITH FRIENDS! Many people who do come here (especially commuters) already have friends, and making new ones won't be very high on their to-do lists. Because of this, it can be very hard to find friends.

The campus can feel so oppressed. There are some people here who look depressed and are (including me), have anxiety (once again, me), or other mental disorders, and they'll get laughed at right in their face. The police cadets even do this sort of shit occasionally. It's completely disgusting and disappointing how great a percentage of the student body treats others here.

Of course, some people do manage to completely avoid this side of the social scene and actually make friends pretty easily (i.e. Greek life, other people who just get lucky). Once again, this is just based off my own experience and some others I've known.

A lot of the comments about how many of the ethnic people here tend to be cliquey and stay within their own race is very true. Though some of them do expand their social circle, for a school that highlights how diverse it is, it sure is hell is very clique-oriented. Heck, everyone here seems to be like this. It's like high school all over again.

To sum it up, if you only care about getting a degree (and possibly saving some money), you might like this place. Otherwise, seriously, unless you absolutely 100% want to go here, try someplace else.

BTW, if there's anything else positive I can say about this school, the Green Machine and the Mean Green (world class indoor drumline) are amazing!!!
