Major: Mechanical Engineering (This Major's Salary over time)
Michigan Tech has a good reputation, but I feel that they are headed downward. Like many other universities, they are shifting their priorities toward research funding. And thought they have a good reputation, it is only in the eyes of a very small number of entities. Of course they cater to automotive, but I've found that if you hope to find a job outside of the Midwest, the MTU name will not carry you very far. My biggest complaint with MTU however, is their Mechanical Engineering program. It may have been great at one time, but now they have started a new curriculum which includes the courses. This is the 4th semester for these courses, and they are completely disorganized. After 3 semesters, the bugs should be worked out. The main issues are; assignments are unclear, or worded in ways that are extremely confusing; lab steps are out of order; software tutorials are based on outdated software versions (outdated tutorials with steps that no longer exist); assignments are listed under the wrong sections; assignments are due before it is even possible to gather resources (when library has to order engineering standards needed for reference). Most of the MEP assignments are redundant, and often the material covered is ahead of the course level you are in (expected to understand dynamics or vibes before having taken the applicable courses). The worst part is that they ask for student course reviews every semester, but then THEY NEVER FIX WHAT THEY KNOW IS WRONG!! So much of your time is wasted making sense of the assignments rather than learning. In the end MTU's ME program is no better than anywhere else. You get your general engineering courses that are the same at every ABET program, then a lump of impractical labs and coursework thrown on top. Go to VA Tech, Georgia Tech, Texas Tech, Cal Tech… almost any other "tech" since all the ones listed above have better reputations and job placement anyway.
