You can easily compare your salary with your friends in other universities of much lower ranking and with much less work and see how your salary is half or one third of them. Don't come to Purdue if you care about financing your life and having a rationally comfortable life during graduate studies. And absolutely avoid Purdue if you get admitted with a fellowship. Every summer I am coping with high level of stress (for at least one month) trying to figure out why they did not pay me or why they pay me in half. Not to say that tax and engineering fee will take away 20 to 30 percent of your salary, so if they send you an admission letter saying your salary is 1500\(, I assure you, you won't see more than 1100\). BTW, absolutely avoid IE department, not only professors but even clerks will behave like you worth nothing. The hottest topic in IE at the moment is who should clean the kitchen. I have an email in my inbox where clerk is addressing all graduate students as animals who show up for gathering (that they are invited to) just for food!
