Not all departments at SVA are equal. I graduated with an MFA in Computer Art with an Animation Concentration. I found almost all faculty to be top notch! The had a lot of computers , all of which get updated every two years. They also had the latest software. SVA is very well known and connected in the animation industry. Many Blue Sky studio artists teach there. They get many offers by festivals for submissions. In fact, our thesis project got into 12 festivals and we won three. You can also audit any undergraduate course too for free. Also, they have a very good "independent study"available if you want to concentrate on some specific area not offered in the courses.Manhattan is a fabulous place for a student with lots of connections, agencies and other places to find work or do an internship. I really did like SVA. Again, this is based on Computer Art. I can't evaluate other disciplines. Overall, I would say that SVA is one of the top schools in the US if you are interested in 2d animation or 3d animation (computer art). Also, be aware, that although the undergraduate area isn't that competitive to get in, this is not true for graduate work. SVA only accepts about 30% of those who apply to their Computer Art grad program.
