JU is a strange place. Despite that the campus is pretty nice with a swimmingpool, beachvolleyball court, and a bar there is not many students taking advantage of these things. In fact, people seem to prefer staying in their dorms most of the time. JU would have been a more pleasant experience if people were more outgoing. As a transfer student I can say that it was easier to make friends in my previous college.

I do not think that the student population at JU represent FL well, as most students seem to come from NJ, MD, etc. There was also plenty of rich students from south/central american countries - who only spent time with each other and only spoke english in the classroom.

The academic standard vary depending on department. Overall its not good enough. My main political science professor was on tenure and used the time in class however he liked - when he showed up at all.

Some professors were good tho, and my friends seemed satisfied with the business school (which btw has great facilities).

And, like many other colleges JU has too low admission requirements, which lowers the quality of education.

The athletic teams are not very successfull - which is inexcusable considering the scholarship money JU provides. Several of the sport teams have severe drug problems, which is well-known around campus.

The surrounding area is dangerous. But campus is safe. You will need a car/ a friend with a car to be able to enjoy life outside the campus area tho. Except on saturdays when there is a shuttle going to town center.

Although this review has been pretty negative overall, I would not tell you not to apply. JU has been making some great investments during the last years and will double its student population. I think that will make the life at JU more enjoyable. Hopefully they will also make sure that the academic level is improved as well.
