I recently read an article in the NY Times comparing Earlham College with Pomona College (NYT 17 April 2011 Pg. ED33). The article confirmed my suspicions about Earlham's tuition and amount of money spent on students. The article states that Earlham charges the same tuition as top tier liberal arts colleges but spends about half as much per student. During my time at Earlham I suspected the college was more concerned with endowment growth than student experience, which I think the article confirms. How can a college in rural Indiana have anywhere near the operating costs of a college next to Los Angeles? Consider also the fact that Earlham pays professors about half the national average and routinely denies financial aid students access to foreign studies (not officially, just in practice). What I mean to say is that Earlham is spectacularly cheap. In what system can a service provider pay half and still provide the same level of service? Think about that when your "career counselor" turns out to be a fellow student that's never held a job.
